Members of parliament on the Parliamentary Legal and Affairs Committee chaired by the Gomba West Member of Parliament Robinah Rwakoojo have been shocked to learn that the country loses 20 trillion shillings in corruption tendencies annually.

While appearing before the committee to present the Inspectorate Budget for the next financial year, the Inspectorate of General of Government -IGG Betty Namisango Kamya told the MPs that every year Uganda loses 10 trillion shillings in direct corruption and another 10 trillion in absenteeism from work and environmental degradation among others.

Kamya noted that even though the government loses such amount of money in corruption they are not given enough to facilitate their investigations to stop corrupt people from misusing tax payers’ money.

IGG has also asked parliament to appropriate funds for the inspectorate to replace the four vehicles which were destroyed on November 16th last year in Kampala bombings whereby one bomb was detonated near the inspectorate offices and destroyed the vehicles.

Kamya also told the committee that the whole fleet of the inspectorate of government of over 100 vehicles is old and they need replacement.

Kamya has further noted that they are working on the robust legal framework which will enable them to move well with their new renovation of lifestyle audit which she thinks is the only solution to end corruption amongst government officials and in Uganda at large.
