The Catholic Church in Uganda is grieving for the loss of Rt. Rev. Edward Akiiki Baharagate the Bishop Emeritus of Hoima.

Bishop Baharagate died this morning from Nsambya Hospital where he has been admitted for a while due to ill health.

Bishop Baharagate, 93, was born on 25 February 1930 in Nyamigisa Village, in present-day Masindi District, in Bunyoro sub-region, in the Western Region of Uganda. He was ordained a priest on 7 December 1958.

He was appointed Bishop of Hoima on 7 July 1969 and was consecrated a bishop at Hoima on 1 August 1969 by Pope Paul VI assisted by Archbishop Sergio Pignedoli, Titular Archbishop of Iconium and Archbishop Emmanuel Kiwanuka Nsubuga, Archbishop of Archdiocese of Kampala.

On March 9, 1991, Baharagate resigned as Bishop of Hoima and was replaced by Bishop Deogratius Byabazaire who has also since passed on.

He continued with his priestly work from Our Lady of Fatima Nankulabye in Kampala Archdiocese for a number of years until he returned to St. Jude town church Masindi, Hoima diocese some three years ago.

Last year, he launched an environmental conservation campaign which he said was aimed at improving humanity and he urged all leaders to rally people to address such threats to humanity.

He was visited by President Museveni at St. Jude Catholic parish in Masindi town when the President visited Masindi District to commission a five-star hotel and Radio Seven.

He is credited for his pastoral, spiritual and development charisma, where he started schools, Health centers and Kolping Hotel which have transformed Hoima diocese. He will be remembered for his zeal for sports.

May his soul rest in eternal peace
