Gov’t should fund research and innovation in the universities

The State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs Huda Oleru has asked Government to fund research and innovation in universities.

She made the remarks today while presiding over the International Research and Development Conference at Kampala International University-KIU.

Oleru adds that Uganda and Africa at large is faced with a lot of leadership and developmental challenges like; climate change, brain drain, conflict and conflict management which need solution identification saying it is universities to research and provide the solutions to these problems hence calling on Government to financially support them.

In relation to the above, she revealed that the world has faced the challenges of COVID-19 and Russia-Ukrainian war which have come up with new challenges that require research to find their solutions.

On his part, the KIU Vice Chancellor Muhammad Mpeza-mihigo says that problem identification is not enough, scholars need to go beyond and find solutions to these problems and that’s why the university is organizing such a conference to enable young people to learn to make problem solving research.
