The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Mary Goretti Kitutu has launched the resumption of the Electricity Connection Policy which will start with no-pole connections for the people who already paid the connection fees.

It should be noted that the policy which was established in 2018 was suspended in December 2020 due to financial constraints.

Addressing a news conference at the Uganda Media Center in Kampala, Kitutu revealed that the resumption of the Electricity Connection policy which commences on March 8th 2021 will be implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and under this, Government is obliged to meet the cost of the no-pole and one-pole connections while consumers will pay inspection fees of 200,000 Shillings to service providers to facilitate inspection of house wiring to ensure that it is well done and safe to receive power.

Kitutu also revealed that the REA has been able to procure over 87,500 connection materials under the African Development Bank funding in addition to the 2,598 connection materials under the Islamic Development Bank funding phase 1.

Meanwhile, she also revealed that they will be borrowing 400 million US Dollars to facilitate electricity distribution and connections across the country and that Government also allocated 14.2 billion shillings to Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited and small service providers to partly pay for the already made connections and commence with the new connections.
