The Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed the invasion of variegated insects that are in the form of desert locusts that are attacking crops in Buhweju district.

This is after Buhweju county Member of Parliament Francis Mwijukye reported an outbreak of desert locust in his area early this week in parliament during a plenary sitting.

While speaking to journalists at Parliament on Friday, the State Minister for Agriculture Fred Kyakulaga said that these are wild insects that feed on many plants but their preferred crop is cassava.

The minister added that the multi-colored insects live in the wild but because of drought and the human activities that have encroached on the environment, they have moved to the arable land.

Kyakulaga however informs parliament that a team of agricultural officers with enough pesticides have already been dispatched to spray the affected areas in Buhweju district.

In April 2020, the Government procured 10,000 litres of Fenitrothion, a phosphorothioate insecticide that is inexpensive and widely used worldwide, for aerial spraying against locusts.
