Ministry of Health has been called upon to lobby parliament to consider allocating funds in the 2021/2022 financial year budget for the ongoing construction of a new accident and trauma ward at Nkozi hospital, Mpigi district.

Nkozi Hospital, a Catholic mission founded hospital located in Kayabwe Trading center in Mpigi district along Kampala- Masaka road, is still struggling to raise funds to finance the construction of a new causality ward and has since 2016 been hunting for 7.8 billion shillings for the project.

The Catholic Church and hospital administrators together with Rotary Club International have conducted several fundraising drives that include; car washing, marathons, dinners and donors conferences but less than a billion shillings has so far been raised.

Rev. Fr. Prof. John Chrysostom Maviiri, the Chairman of the Friends of Nkozi Hospital, who are part of the groups helping in the construction of the center, while addressing journalists on Wednesday at Nkozi during the inspection of the progress for the project work, said that the foundation work is done but they have run out of funds for the big remaining work.

Fr. Maviiri suggests that Ministry of Health should support such a project by ensuring that in the coming financial year 2021/2022 budget, parliament allocates funds for the construction of this emergency facility that is intended to save lives of accident victims along Kampala- Masaka road.

However, Dr Crescent Tumuhaise the Medical Director at Nkozi Hospital attributed the slow progress of the construction work to outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic in the country that has affected most of the activities that were planned such as; Marathons, Dinners, car washes among others to raise funds, but he has disclosed that this year they intend to continue with all activities while observing SOPs to realize their mission.

At the same press conference, the outgoing Nkozi Hospital Administrator Rev. Sr. Maria Teddy Nakyanzi said due to urgent need of the facility, they expect to put to use the first phase of the construction site as soon as it gets completed hence urging the public and well wishers to continue supporting the project through the bank account in Centenary Bank Limited, Account name: Nkozi Hospital project, A/C no.3920400165 and Tel: 0773-358690.
