At least 18 escapees from Moroto maximum security prisons have so far been captured and found with COVID-19 disease, according to Uganda Prison Services.

Early this month, more 200 inmates were reportedly escaped from Moroto maximum security prison in the northwest Karamoja region.

Addressing the media in Kampala, the Prison Spokesperson Frank Baine says the 18 were part of the 57 escapees that were found positive of COVID-19 before escaping after a mass testing that covered a total of 701 inmates from all prisons.

Baine says that 12 escapees have died while another 437 inmates that were found with COVID-19, have recovered yet 15 prison staff are still battling with the diseases together with their 7 family members who are their contacts.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng is worried that they haven’t established the extent of spreading the disease these escapees have contributed to the society.
