Government has extended the term of office for LCI, LC2 and Women Councils to a period of 6 months.

The term of office for these village administrations expired earlier this month and any over stay in office without a legal instrument has grave repercussions which seem unseen by the line ministry.

This prompted the speaker of parliament Annet Anitah Among to suspend parliament over the government’s failure to committee to solve the matter soon.

Speaking to the press at the Uganda media centre on Tuesday in Kampala, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance Dr. Chris Baryomunsi noted that  the decision to extend the term of office of LCI was taken in cabinets meeting chaired by president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Monday.

According to Dr Baryomunsi, the Attorney General and the Minister for Local Government were instructed to come up with the statutory instrument that will be presented to parliament for approval before a public notice confirming this extension is issued by the same ministry.

The Electoral Commission presented a budget requirement of Shs 59 billion to conduct these elections which the ministry of finance turned down.
