Government has now extended the Senior Citizens Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) project to 135 districts in the country reaching 358,420 older persons starting this June 2020.

Currently only 47 districts have been benefiting from the project for citizens 80 years and above who are registered with NIRA and in possession of valid national Identification card.

The State Minister for Gender and Culture, Peace Mutuuzo  told the press at the Uganda Media Center that the decision to extend this grants project was premised on the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on older persons which has left them helpless and in need of a helping hand to regain stability.

Mutuuzo adds that as we fight COVID-19 it should be noted that globally older persons have greatly been affected by the pandemic as over 70% of victims are persons aged 60 years and above due to several underlying health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiac diseases and respiratory problems so they need to be assisted.

She also revealed that on June 15th Uganda will join the rest of the world to commemorate World Elders Abuse Awareness Day under the theme “Promoting and Protecting Older Persons’ Rights, during and after the Covid-19 Pandemic.”
