Government has declared Tuesday July 10th a public holiday, as the country heads to the polls to elect village councils.

The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Information and ICT Christine Bitarakwate made the announcement in a letter to the Ministry of Public Service.

The public holiday, she said in the letter, was to enable all Ugandans to participate in the Local Council 1 elections to be conducted by the Electoral Commission.

The election is coming after almost 17 years since the country held similar elections in 2001 and it has already created hype in the public with the end of nominations of the candidates today that is to be preceded with campaigns for three days and the elections on Tuesday.

The director inspection and quality assurance in the ministry of public service Salome Nyamungu notes that every Uganda must participate in this exercise for the good of the communities.

Namuyangu also has assured voters in the newly created 3,820 villages that their elections will be held within two months from now.

She also clarified on the variations of the number of villages in the country by the electoral commission stands at 60,801 villages but the ministry has got 64,621 villages in her records.

She has also assured students of Makerere University who vote within to stay calm because they are negotiating with the electoral commission to ensure that they vote on the same polling days when the new districts will be voting.
