Lieutenant General Henry Tumukunde has been arrested on Thursday evening from his office on along Impala Avenue in Kololo by a combined team of Special Forces Command (SFC) soldiers and Police Counter Terrorism Unit.

The security agencies were led by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director Grace Akullo and the Assistant Commissioner of Police Francis Olugu, the head of general crime desk.

Tumukunde, a former military intelligence and Internal Security Organization (ISO) chief, was later driven to CID headquarters in Kibuli.

Before his arrested, he had earlier posted on social media that his office has been surrounded by army officers.

Last week Tumukunde declared his intentions to contest for the Presidency against President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the forthcoming 2021 general elections.

Tumukunde is a retired senior military officer of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) and on 28 May 2005 he was forced to resign from Parliament and subsequently arrested on the orders of the president.

By press time, no statement from government, police or army had been released yet regarding Tumukunde’s arrest.
