The Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister General Kahinda Otafiiire have denied being involved in the irregular transfer of a government building to a suspected land grabber.

Otafiire while serving as Minister of Trade, Tourism and Industry allegedly initiated the idea of granting a letter of no objection to Birus Properties, a company owned by Movit Product boss Simpson Birungi.

It is said that Birungi used Otafiire’s letter to apply for a lease on plot 60/62 Alidina road in Jinja Municipality, process titles for the same land and later demolished the building despite interventions by the Privatization Unit and Inspectorate of Government.

Appearing before Lady Justice Catherine Bamugemereire’s Land Commission of Inquiry today, Otafiire says that his letter of No objection was only emphasizing that his then Ministry wasn’t responsible for that land and the building as well.

Meanwhile, the Commission today hear only Otafiire after Justice Bamugemereire had to attend a funeral of a relative as the Commission’s lead council Ebert Byenkya explains.
