The Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises-Uganda FSME an umbrella body for the small business community has explained the magnitude at which high fuel prices have crippled their businesses across the country.

The gridlock resulted from mandatory Covid-19 tests at entry border points introduced at the start of the year that is now holding the trucks for about 10 days in a queue. Previously, Uganda allowed drivers entry with negative results for tests taken elsewhere.

Gasoline prices in Kampala have shoot up to around 7,000 shillings per liter from 4,000 shillings and in some places it has reached 10,000/=.

Addressing the media at their offices in Kampala, the Executive Director FSME John Walugembe notes that many small and medium businesses mainly depend on fuel for transportation and that a rise in the prices of fuel would have a significant impact on their survival.

Walugembe is suggesting that the government should put a competition authority to regulate the prices of commodities.
