Fishmaw and trader’s associations have petitioned parliament’s committee on agriculture, animal industry and fisheries to intervene on the unrealistic and excessive taxes imposed on fish maw traders.

The general secretary of the association Simon Musana while presenting the petition has informed mps that as traders they pay a number of taxes ranging from annual license fees, trading licenses, income tax, certificate of public health among others.

Musana adds that they now pay 6 percent withholding tax on each of the sales made in Uganda and they would like mps to intervene and have this reduced to 0.5 percent

He says that these charges are excessive and they want the committee to intervene and have them renegotiated with government.

Musana has also called for the implementation of the fisheries and aquaculture act 2022 to prevent the continued acts of harassment on lakes by security personnel.

The Nakaseke north mp Enock Nyongere wondered if the regulations of the fisheries act were tabled in parliament.
