The Uganda Women Parliamentary Association-UWOPA has called on the government to allocate funds for the construction of regional shelters for girls and women affected by gender based violence.

This was asked by the chairperson of UWOPA Sarah Opendi while officiating at the function at parliament to commemorate the 16 days of activism against GBV that started on 23rd of November and it’s ending on 10th December 2022.

Opendi, who is also the Tororo District Woman MP, challenged married couples to have true love for each other as a way of preventing GBV in families and communities.

She says the government through the ministry of gender should construct regional shelters to support refugees and all those facing GBV to get justice.

Opendi appealed to the deputy speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa who was also the guest of honor to allow the re-tabling of the sexual offenses bill as a private members bill as one of the means to address the challenges of GBV.

At the opening of the function, the deputy speaker Tayebwa urged men to always support their wife at home and avoid carrying their job titles at home or think of always being treated like kings that results in GBV.
