Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has unveiled Freddy Newton Okello as their flag bearer for Oyam County north by-election.

The seat fell vacant following the death of the then member of Parliament Charles Okello Engola who was shot by his body guard Pte Wilson Sabiiti earlier this month.

Speaking to the press at the party headquarters Harold Kaija the deputy party secretary general described Okello as a dedicated member of FDC who has undergone rigorous scrutiny and preparation for public leadership and possesses qualities and values necessary to serve the people of Oyam County north.

Kaija revealed that they are aware of the NRM state machinery to intimidate and suppress their supporters but they are not ready to give up.

Okello informed the press that he is ready to address issues affecting his voters such as the education system, improving the health sector in their area among others.

When asked about the ongoing practice where sons of the members of parliament inherit their seats Okello responded with confidence that there is no way how junior Engola son of the former area mp can win the election since he hasn’t been in the area for some time, his not a member of the ruling party and there is no way NRM can unveil him as a party flag bearer.

Meanwhile, nine people have so far expressed interest to be flag bearer of the NRM party for the Oyam county North by election.

According to the electoral commission, the road map nomination of candidates for this seat will kick off from 20th -26 June, campaigns will be held from 22nd June-4th July and elections will be held on 6th July.
