The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has asked Members of Parliament to halt the government’s plan of introducing digital number plates.

In 2021, the government hand-picked the Russian firm to supply digital number plates embedded with surveillance chips under the envisaged intelligent Transport Motoring system.

The new number plates were to be launched on 1st July 2023 but all failed including the supplies from the cleared firm to make the project operational forcing the government to suspend the plan following an order from the inspectorate of government over a petition from Uganda’s company GM Tumpeco Ltd and Anold Brooklyn makers of number plates who were against the move to terminate their contract.

Now addressing the press at their party headquarters at Najjanankumbi, the FDC Deputy Secretary General Harold Kaija noted that the plan is a waste of taxpayers money that deserves a termination.

He says that the plan will not help Uganda to fight criminality as it is targeted but rather encroach on the people’s privacy.

Kaija adds that the said Russian company that is to manufacture the digital number plates has no track record in the specific field may be it was done to sabotage Uganda’s company which has been doing the work.
