The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has been given 3 days  within which to revive Shs142b city markets compensation case against businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba and his brother Muzamiru Basajjabalaba or else a demonstration will be called in the city center.

Recently, media reported that DPP Jane Frances Abodo secretly dropped the 3 charges of forgery, uttering a false document and conspiracy to evade taxes against Hassan Basajjabalaba and his brother Muzamiru because most of the key witnesses have since passed away.

Counsel Isaac Ssemakede from Legal Brains Trust, together with activists from Lubaga Justice Center told the media in Kampala that prosecutorial independence and discretion must not be used to cloth impunity and corruption.

Ssemakede adds that the case involves hundreds of billions of taxpayers’ money so the DPP Abodo has an obligation to reveal to Ugandans which witnesses exactly died and what was their role in the case.

He disclosed that Legal Brains Trust wrote to the head of the Anti-Corruption Court, Justice Lawrence Gidudu, demanding that he fast-tracks the fixing and hearing of the matter since the Constitutional Court had ordered for their trail but it disheartening to hear the DPP saying that the case was closed.

Ssemakadde has threatened to organize a demonstration if the Court fails to fix this matter in 3 days.
