The opposition Democratic Party-DP has challenged the Government to prioritize funding for its schools to enable them fully compete with the privately owned schools in the country.

According to the 2023 PLE results, the number of candidates in the Ungraded Division is quite high, at 88,269 which is 10.4% and most of them are from Government owned schools.

While addressing journalists at the party headquarters at City House in Kampala, Ismail Kiirya, the party acting DP spokesperson said that the performance of Government schools is worrying and it does not reflect a bright future for the next generation.

Kiirya adds that the Government committed to pay school fees for every child in Government schools but he says the capitation grant of over 20,000Shs per child annually is very small to cater for the needs of any serious learning child.

He has disclosed that it is very bad that in Uganda every parent is fighting to take their children to private schools because they have a better standard in comparison to the Government schools.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party has called for the arrest of one Moses Simbwa over malice and tarnishing of the Government’s name.

This is after Simbwa’s confession to President Museveni during the Liberation Day celebrations in Jinja that he was misled to say that the Government security personnel abducted and tortured him yet he was an accident victim after he was paid by the opposition to lie about his condition.

Kiirya says in a country which has democracy, Simbwa would be arrested by now and aligned before court for tarnishing the government’s name.
