Police have reported a reduction by 2.3 percent in death related cases by shooting in the year 2017 compared to 2016.

Presenting the annual crime report at Police headquarters in Naguru, the Director Criminal Intelligence Directorate AIGP Grace Akuro said that a total of 167 cases were reported in 2017 compared to 171 cases recorded in 2016.

Albertine region led with 19 cases, followed by Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) East with 15 cases, North West Nile with 13 cases, KMP South (11 cases), Rwenzori East’s 10 cases, Rwenzori West, Busoga East and Rwizi 9 cases each.

Most of the shootings took place in the districts of Moyo and Kakumiro with 09 cases, followed by Mayuge 8 cases, Mbarara 7 cases, Kira Road Division, Katwe Division, Hoima and Bundibugyo with 05 cases each.

By the end of the year, 53 cases of death by shooting were taken to court, 03 cases secured conviction, and 02 cases were dismissed while 47 cases were still pending in court.

A total of 96 cases were still under investigations. A total of 164 people were shot dead, of whom 144 were male adults, 14 were female adults, 04 were male juveniles and 02 were female juveniles.
