The Civil Society Organizations advocating for future food safety have backed the Members of Parliament in the move to draft a new genetically Modified Organism –GMO bill to replace it with the recently passed bill.

This comes after a section of MPs led by the Bufumbira County East representative, James Nsaba Buturo recently showed their plan to introduce a bill prohibiting Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

Addressing a joint Press conference in Kampala today, Cynthia Muhiirwa, the Legal and Advocacy Officer for Caritas Uganda says that the National Biotechnology and Biosafety Bill, 2012 doesn’t include and encompasses the value chain but only focuses on small areas and without safety measures.

She says that the current bill should be withdrawn and be replaced by the new bill that will involve all activities of GMOs including the vaccines.

Barbara Ntambirwela, the Legal and Research Officer for Africa Technology Assessment Platform –AfriTAP they need all the issues in this bill that were hinted at by President Museveni to be re-drafted including the genetic manipulation, use of poisonous and dangerous viruses and bacteria among others.

President Museveni declined to sign into law the National Biotechnology and Biosafety Bill 2012 which would have paved the way for the release of Genetic Modification seed varieties.
