The Inspector General of Police has directed all territorial commanders to provide necessary protection to pilgrims trekking from different parts of the country to Namugongo from June 3rd Martyrs Day celebrations.

 

According to the police, hundreds of pilgrims have started walking from the districts of Arua, Lira, Gulu and Kanungu among others as well as those from Kenya are also on their way to Namugongo.

 

Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesperson says that they have already registered pilgrims from DRC that have already entered Uganda through Kanungu and those from South Sudan, and Tanzania are also on their way to Namugongo in Wakiso district for Martyrs day celebrations.

 

He says that Police Commanders have been instructed to ensure that pilgrims don’t walk at night and get security at the stop over places.

 

Enanga adds that they have put in place Police ambulances along highways to help those that may fail along the way to Namugongo.

 

Meanwhile, Police have issued guidelines for all Pilgrims trekking to Namugongo to avoid moving with heavy luggage, move in groups, stay away from sharp objects and also avoid moving in the middle of the roads.
