Besigye insists on having proof of his 2016 election victory

Rtd Major General Mugisha Muntu, a former army commander and now president of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) political party has asked the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) to give hope that it can protect the rights of the citizens.

This was while Muntu together with Col (Rtd) Kizza Besigye,had appeared before the UHRC chaired by the chairperson, Mariam Wangadya, over a case filed in 2016 which Police and Army led by Former AIGP Felix Kaweesi broke into FDC party offices and arrested Gen Mugisha Muntu and Ingrid Turinawe.

Muntu says the country needs assurance that UHRC can act independently and deliver justice to victims of torture and this will be based on the way they are handling cases of that nature.

He cited Dr. Besigye as a tortured victim with factual evidence of undergoing treatment since he was tortured years ago, something that the commission needs to address.

In the same tribunal session Dr. Kiiza Besigye informed the Commission that he has been arrested severally, charged but has never defended himself or found guilty- which he termed as political persecution.

He further noted that he still possesses evidence that he defeated President Museveni in the 2016 presidential election.

He also emphasized the issue of stamping out impunity in the country and further urged the NRM government led by President Yoweri Museveni to accept that there is opposition in the country that must exercise its freedom of association.

However, Wangadya said that they delayed to handle Besigye’s case due to logistical issues and the death of former commission chairperson Medi Ssozi Kaggwa.
