The Chief Justice Bart Katureebe has appealed to the Government to enact laws that will enable quick dispensation of justice in land related matters.

Katureebe made the remarks while delivering his speech at the 22nd Annual Judges Conference taking place at Mestil Hotel in Kampala.

Basing on the theme “Discharging, the mandate of the Judiciary towards a Modern, Professional and Effective Judiciary” Katureebe said urgency in the laws to guide the Judges on how to adjudicate land matters will help stop battles in land matters.

He noted that visiting the locus quos (scene of the land in contention) before any judgment in a land matter is ideal but over time the judges are limited by funds which contributes to backlog of cases currently totaling to 5,000 in the Land Division of High Court that has only five Judges.

He appealed to the Government to appoint more Judges and is waiting for the recommendations from the Land inquiry commission headed by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire on how best to handle land matters.
