The Church of Uganda and its development partner Dan Church Aid -DCA has today joined the rest of the world to commemorate the International Women’s Day through a cook event to symbolically deconstruct the traditional gender roles that hinder women’s participation in the social, economic and political agenda in Uganda.

The Archbishop Church of Uganda Dr Stephen Kazimba Mugalu accompanied by Anders Bastholm Hansen, the Country Representative for the Dan Church Aid participated in the cooking activity at the Provincial Secretariat Namirembe.

Addressing the journalists after the cook, His Grace Dr Stephen Kazimba Mugalu highlighted issued challenging women and girls saying that the female gender is the still the poorest and most vulnerable group that continues to bear the burden of the environmental, economic, and social costs of climate change worsened by cultural stereotypes.

He says that there is increase in unpaid domestic care and agricultural work for women and girls, limited access to clean water, greater risk of injury due to disasters and sexual and gender – based violence.

Dr. Kazimba however called on the government, stakeholders and development partners to ensure systems are in place and resources are allocated to empower the vulnerable girls.

The International women’s day is globally celebrated on March 8 to recognize the extraordinary contribution of women and to stand together as a united force to advance gender equality around the world.
