The Citizens’ Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda (CCEDU) is worried that the 2021 general elections is most likely to be covered with high cases of violence according to what happened in the just concluded NRM parliamentary primaries, village youth and special interest group elections.

Addressing journalists at their offices in Muyenga, the CCEDU Executive Director Charity Ahimbisibwe said that the persistent trend of election violence could be attributed to discontent, frustration, mistrust and disgruntlement among the electorate and political actors.

NRM parliamentary primary election was majorly quoted to have been marred with election violence, disobeying the Standard Operating Procedures and Ministry of Health guidelines against the spread of Covid-19 among others.

Ahimbisibwe further says that NRM’s voting by lining up system contributed more havoc in the elections of which they have been opposing since it violates secrecy but instead promotes hatred and chaos between the candidates and the voters.

The CCEDU Chairman Board of Directors Miria Matembe says NRM parliamentary elections disclosed the truth that government can’t ensure the rightful observation of SOPs and Ministry of Health guidelines for COVID-19 during the election processes, which needed a postponement of elections.

She said this as the Masindi incumbent district woman Mp Jalia Bintu an NRM member had also regretted the mode of election of lining up with in the NRM primaries that threatened many who feared to be attacked or labeled, the corruption and violence which left most of them left out.
