Government is to soon start implementing the President’s directive of installing electronic tracking devices in vehicles and motorcycles as means of curbing the increasing crime rate across the country.

This Tuesday, the Minister for Security, Jim Muhwezi informed the press that they want to implement the directive such that security is guaranteed across the country.

He adds that the measure would not invade people’s privacy but rather help to follow up suspects easily and combat crime.

He says government may not afford to pay for these devices for everyone in the country but may instead negotiate with a company contracted to procure the devices such that they sell them at reasonable prices so that everyone can afford it.

Early this month, President Museveni instructed the State Minister for Internal Affairs General David Muhoozi to revive vehicle tracking devices as a way of eliminating hard core crimes in Uganda.

Museveni made these remarks during his speech on National Budget reading at Kololo independent grounds.

The president first ordered for digital trackers to be installed in all vehicles in 2018, at the peak of the murder spate which claimed prominent Ugandans.
