The Archbishop of Gulu His Grace John Baptist odama has called for selfless service, a virtue that is scarce in the current generation in Uganda.

In his message at the last prayers for the late Bishop Joseph Oyanga at the Holy Martyrs’ of Uganda Cathedral in Lira, Archbishop Odama described the Bishop Emeritus of Lira diocese as a man who offered himself for those in need due to political persecution and wars that rocked the entire northern region including Lira.

He served Lira diocese for 14 years as a bishop until his retirement in 2003.

He said Ugandans need to lead by example drawing from their past leaders for the country to promote and protect its dignity.

The main preacher Rt. Rev. Bishop Joseph Franzelli of Lira Diocese acknowledged the late for his exceptional assistance, guidance and counsel that helped him to understand the diocese and serve to the best of his ability.

Bishop Oyanga, died on July 22nd at St. Anthony hospital in Tororo at 82 years of age.

He was ordained a priest of Tororo Diocese on 19th May 1963 in Alanyi parish by Bishop Cypriano Ki-hangire of Gulu.

He worked in Tororo Diocese until 14th of July 1989, when he was elected Second Bishop of Lira Diocese succeeding Bishop Cesare Asili and handed over to Bishop Joseph Franzelli, the current ordinary of the diocese since 2005 to date.

Bishop Oyanga has been buried at the Cathedral near Bishop Asili and the Bishops present at the burial included their Graces, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, Emmanuel Obbo, and Bishops of Moroto, Nebbi, Kotido and Moroto, priests, religious and well-wishers.
