Two Judges of the Constitutional Court, Justices Cheborion Barishaki and Elizabeth Musoke have ruled against extending of the tenure of parliament from five years to seven years.

In December 2017, Parliament passed the Age Limit Bill into law and among other things it amended are the tenure of office for MPs and that of local councils from five to seven years.

The amendment was entailed in Sections 2, 6 and 10 of the constitutional amendment, which was passed by the house and signed by President Yoweri Museveni.

However, according to Justice Musoke, it was wrong for Members of Parliament to extend the tenure for more two years without consulting the electorate.

She said that the article in regards extending the term of parliament is entrenched and ought to have been amended through a referendum.

Earlier on, Justice, Barishaki had also ruled against the decision to extend the tenure of parliament from five to seven years describing it as selfish and going against the principal of good governance.

By press time, Justice Kenneth Kakuru had started delivering his judgment.
