One of the beer manufacturing companies in Uganda has called for the shelving of the proposed Alcohol Control Bill 2023.

Appearing before the parliamentary Health Committee, the Legal Director of Corporate Affairs Nile Breweries Emmanuel Njuki said that the proposers of the bill should rather focus on eliminating poison alcohol from the market than banning and regulating the consumption and selling of alcohol.

Njuki argues that seven out of 10 Ugandans who consume alcohol take in poisonous alcohol which needs to be first regulated.

The beer companies propose that the proposed Alcohol Control Bill 2023 as moved by Tororo District woman MP Sarah Opendi should be stopped and replaced by an illicit Alcohol control bill that aims to eliminate poisonous alcohol.

The current proposed Alcohol Control Bill 2023 tends to ban and restrict the consumption and selling of alcohol like banning the sale of alcohol in public transport, regulating the sale and time of consuming alcohol, regulating the age at which to consume alcohol, and others.
