Striking Arts Teachers through their umbrella the Uganda National Teachers Union – UNATU have finally complied with President’s plea to suspend their industrial action until further notice.

This follows a three hours meeting with President Yoweri Museveni, the Education Minister also First Lady Janet Museveni and Minister of Public Service Wilson Mululi Mukasa at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala where they agreed to continue with discussions about salary pay rise as teachers return to classes.

UNATU General Secretary Filbert Baguma confirmed that the union leadership after meeting President Museveni, resolved to suspend the industrial action and agreed to fully resume teaching this Wednesday July 6th 2022.

Wilson Owere, the Chairperson of National Organization of Trade Union –NOTU says they are committed to pushing for the pay rise as President Museveni’s commitment stands to increase the salaries of Arts teachers.

The Arts teachers through their umbrella body, UNATU, laid down their tools on June 15 over a pay rise paralyzing teaching and learning in most government schools.

Since then, UNATU has held a number of meetings with the top leadership of the government and line ministries to try and find a solution to their grievances.

The most recent meeting was convened by the Vice President Ms Jessica Alupo last week, where she appealed to teachers to call off their strike as negotiations continue to enable learners resume studies.
