The Former Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament who is also the Bukedea District Woman legislature, Anita Annet Among has won the speakership election and declared the New Speaker of the 11th Ugandan Parliament.

Out of the 468 total votes cast, Rt. Hon. Among polled 401votes while her opponent Asuman Basalirwa, the Bugiri Municipality MP polled 66 votes as only one vote was declared invalid.

Among was representing the ruling National Resistance Movement -NRM while Basalirwa was on the opposition ticket for the Speakership election that has been meant to fill the position that went vacant after the death of the fallen Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah.

The Chief Judge, Justice Alphonse Owinyi- Dollo declared Among as the New Speaker of the 11th Parliament after emerging with the highest number of votes.

Later, President Yoweri Museveni who witnessed the election handed over the instruments of power including the coat of arms and Mace among others to the Speaker Elect who later took oath at Kololo independence ground.

Delivering her first address before the MPs, the Speaker Elect, Rt Hon. Anita Annet Among accepted the responsibility for her new position and also highlighted out the major challenges that the August house has faced in the previous one year including the effects of Covid-19 pandemic and the death of her former boss Oulanyah.

She has pledged to provide equitable debate among the MPs without basing on the political affiliation and requested for tolerance plus mutual respect from the legislatures.

Basalirwa however conceded the defeat saying the election has been free and fair unlike the other elections in the country.

Among replaced her fallen boss with immediate effect and presided over the election of the Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

Later Anita presided over the election of her deputy speaker Thomas Tayebwa who polled 379 votes against Moses Okot Bitek of the opposition who got 82 votes.
