A section of Acholi Parliamentary Group has accused Uganda Peoples Defense Force (UPDF) for masterminding the killings in Apaa – Acholi sub-region.
Addressing journalists at Parliament, the faction’s General Secretary who is also the Kilak South Member of Parliament Gilbert Olanya says a one 4th division commander Brigadier General Michael Kabango is supervising the destruction, burning, arrests and other inhuman acts against the people of Apaa.
He says that in the past week’s, homes of people have been burnt down and others killed by the UPDF soldiers disguised as Madi people from Ajumani using bows and arrows.
MPs who included Agago North MP Amos Okot serving as the Chairperson, Gulu Woman MP Betty Awol Achan as Vice President, Chua West MP Philip Ojara say the government wants to forcefully own their land measuring to 42 square kilometers having found that it has oil deposits.
The MPs are now demanding that UPDF vacate the land immediately and they are planning to excuse themselves from Parliament starting next week to join their people in reclaiming their land.
System of land ownership and greed has been identified as the major causes of increasing land disputes in the Lango sub-region.
In Lango, land is customarily owned where pieces of land belong to particular households, communities, and or the clan. Since there is no proof of ownership, everyone wants to use the same piece of land resulting in land disputes.
