At least 26 Ugandans are set to be repatriated after spending months held hostage in Myanmar, an Asian country.

In February this year the Government of Uganda through the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja confirmed to have collaborated with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to secure the release and repatriation of Ugandans held hostage by rebel groups in Myanmar.

About 30 individuals were then recorded held at two different rebel camps in Myanmar, having initially responded to adverts on fictitious websites for highly paying jobs.

Derek Basalirwa Kigenyi, the National Coordinator of Prevention of Trafficking in Persons in the Ministry of Internal Affairs says that the 26 victims have already been secured and are in safe hands waiting for the completion of the repatriation process.

He further notes that another set of 13 Ugandans is still remaining in Myanmar though the Ugandan Government is working closely with its counterparts in Malaysia, Thailand and Myanmar to ensure they are also released.

Meanwhile, the Government has already arrested one Edith Mukasa Sabuka, the prime suspect for trafficking these Ugandans to Myanmar and she is soon to be charged in courts of law.
