Government has revealed plans of conducting bone marrow transplant in the country which is one of the professional health treatment for people leaving with sickle cells.

According to The Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine they are in the process of drafting a policy that will guide the operation exercise and it’s expected to be conducted at Mulago National Referral Hospital and at Lubowa specialized hospital that is not yet even constructed.

She said this while the country joined the rest of the world to commemorate the World Sickle cell Day, at the Ministry of Health headquarters in Wandegeya today.

Atwine says government is in the process of providing Hydroxyurea drugs in at least 20 health centers that will be designated for sickle cell treatment.

Sickle Cells contribute substantially to mortality in children younger than 5 years in sub-Saharan Africa. In Uganda, 20 000 babies per year are thought to be born with sickle cell disease.
