The chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), Med Kaggwa has died.

Kaggwa, the former Kawempe South MP was pronounced dead by doctors at Case Hospital where he was rushed this morning at around 7.30 after getting an attack in his car near Mulago.

The medial director Case Hospital Patrick Kaliika explained that unnamed Dr. from Mulago hospital who was also on the road jumped out of his car and with the help of nearby people broke the windscreen of the car pulled him out and tried to resuscitate him with the mouth with no response as he called for assistance.

When they reached Case Hospital the deceased was put on support machines with no signs of life and after an hour he was pronounced dead. They however maintain that the family members were aware that Mr.Kaggwa had high blood pressure which could have caused the problem.

Officials at the UHRC are grieving the demise of their boss Kaggwa also a lawyer was scheduled to take part in a media round table discussion organised by the UN children’s agency-UNICEF to commemorate World Children’s Day, today.

Kaggwa, a qualified Lawyer has been serving as the Chairperson of Uganda Human Rights Commission. He has also been a Commissioner and Special Rapporteur on Prisons and Conditions of Detention of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and a Commissioner of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission.

He studied from the National University of Ireland, where he obtained a Master of Laws degree, Makerere University and the Law Development Centre.

He was a Member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the 1995 Constitution of Uganda and a Commissioner of the Uganda Constitutional Commission. Additionally, he has been Head of Department of Law at the Law Development Centre and held a Political Office as Minister in Charge of Political Affairs in the Office of the President.

He is survived by a widow and five children.
