The chairperson of the parliamentary forum on children Bernard Atiku warns parents against promoting child marriages.

Atiku says that there are many cases of parents marrying off their underage daughters under the watch of neighbours and community members. He says this abuse and traumatises the children.

Kakumiro district woman MP Robinah Nabanja says the marrying off of under age children is a backward practice that leaders must condemn for the girl child to benefit from universal primary and secondary education.

The UNICEF and partners report shows that nearly 1 in every 2 girls in Uganda is married before the age of 18.

According to the World Vision study conducted in 2013,  Uganda  ranked 16th among 25 countries with the highest rate of child marriages, with 12% of girls marrying before they have reached the age of 15 and 46% being married off before they turn 18.
