The Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau –UCMB has entered into partnership with Novartis, a global healthcare company to reduce the burden of None Communicable Diseases -NCDs, selected communicable diseases and antimicrobial resistance- AMR in the country in the next two years.

This is the project that was launched on Thursday at Lubaga Hospital in Rubaga division dubbed Novartis/UCMB Familia Nawiri Health System Strengthening Program.

Dr. Ronald Kasyaba, the UCMB Assistant Executive Secretary explains that the major key objective of this project is to train and build the capacity of health workers in Catholic health facilities to increase their awareness so that they could spread out messages to the public about early diagnosis and prevention of NCDs, AMR and selected communicable diseases.

He says that through this project, diseases like sickle cell and epilepsy that are mostly neglected in the communities will also be given more attention to ensure that people visit health facilities for early diagnosis or prevention.

Dr. Charles Oyoo, the Commissioner for NCDs in the Health Ministry and the Guest of Honour for the launch says that it encourages religious health institutions to scale up on screening services to ensure NCDs are prevented.

According to the statistics in the Ministry of Health, NDCs contribute to 33 percent deaths recorded in the country annually excluding the 41% of injuries, mental illnesses and sickle cell disease which tend to turn people unproductive to the country’s development.
