The Ministry of Works and Transport is seeking for five billion shillings to refurbish the eight regional mechanical workshops in the country in the next financial year 2020/21.

The Parliaments’ Committee on Physical Infrastructure Chaired by Nakifuma County Member of Parliament Engineer Kafeero Ssekitooleko says that the ministry only has 400million shillings with funding gap is 4.6billion shillings which is needed to facilitate the running of the eight government workshops.

The Committee on Physical infrastructure is also concerned that the government has paid a deaf ear to the water transport sector which has claimed a huge number of Ugandans by boats capsizing on Lake Victoria.

Sekitooleko has asked the Budget committee to consider allocating 6billion shillings to facilitate the Marine sector but they have only 800million shillings with a funding gap of 4.6billion shillings.

However, Sekitooleko proposes that 5.2billion shillings be allocated as a funding gap to help mitigate the issues of water transport on Uganda’s water bodies.
