The International Crimes division of High Court has denied bail to One of the four accused persons  John Mugerwa who is charged together with the two legislators Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana over charges related to  the wave of machete killings that occurred in greater Masaka district two years ago.

Earlier this month, Mugerwa through his legal team led by Nicholas Ssenkumi applied for bail on grounds that he represented substantial sureties and he was sick seeking court to release him to get treatment.

The State Prosecutor Joseph Kyomuhendo in reply to his bail application stated that the offenses with which the accused person is charged are grave and carry a maximum sentence of death up on conviction and once he is granted bail, chances of abscondment and interfering with the state witnesses are most likely to be experienced.

State has also faulted the accused’s lawyer for not providing proof over the health problem which the prison’s medical team cannot manage hence giving the court a chance to dismiss the bail application over lack of substance and adjourned the matter to 28th August 2023 for hearing on bail ruling.

The accused were arrested on September 7th, 2021 over charges of terrorism and aiding terrorism, which they allegedly coordinated between January and August 2021 in the greater Masaka sub-region.
