The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has termed absentee ministers and members of parliament as corrupt officials who cheat taxpayers.

In her communication to the house, speaker Among was concerned about the low turn-up where only one minister out of the 83 attended had turned by the beginning of the plenary.

The house also had less than 100 members of parliament out of the 556 at the time of opening the session.

She reminded members of their service to the nation above self.

In April this year, the Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, expressed dissatisfaction over the absence of ministers from plenary sessions and called it a “shame” for ministers whose items appeared on the Order Paper to fail to show up.

He indicated that there might be a need to engage the appointing authority over the issue of absent ministers which has become a growing concern in Parliament.

Tayebwa said the House could explore the possibility of referring the matter of absentee ministers to the Committee on Rules, Privileges and Discipline.
