The Court of Appeal has quashed the Conviction of  Sheikh Yunus Kamoga and five others who were convicted of terrorism in 2017 and sentenced to life in jail.

The decision has been made by the deputy Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo, Justice Cheborion Barishaki and Justice Elizabeth Musoke who all agreed that ingredients of murder had not been proved beyond reasonable doubt.

Those who have been set free with Sheik Kamoga include Sheikh Kawooya, Sheikh Murta Budde and Sheikh Fahad Karungi.

However the group didn’t attend court physically and remained in prison to avoid mixing up with people where they could contract Covid- 19 though the Counter terrorism operatives had sealed off the court premises despite the appellant’s absence and thus causing tension.

It was an emotional moment as their lawyers and relatives were seen breaking down into tears after the judgment being read by the court Registrar Mary Babirye in the absence of the accused.

The quashed sentence was handed to the group by a panel of three International Crimes Division Judges led by the   Ezekiel Muhanguzi in 2017
