Three pupils of Apac Model primary school in Apac municipality have tested positive for COVID-19.

The three are part of the primary seven candidates who returned to school to prepare for their Primary Leaving Examinations.

The affected pupils are from the boarding section of the school.  The School headteacher, David Newton Odong, says the positive cases include two girls and a boy.

He says the learners first presented with the symptoms of malaria, which was being managed at the school.

Asked whether the pupils are getting help from teachers, Odong said the teachers are very comfortable with the pupils and are teaching them separately while observing social distance although members of the public are worried of the teachers living amongst them that they might transmit the pandemic.

Francis Leon Oceng, the Apac District Health Officer advises parents not to stigmatize the teachers, saying they haven’t been in close contact with the affected pupils.

This comes after Kwania District local government offices were closed to the public after ten staff tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

The ten were part of 150 people whose samples were taken for testing by a medical team from Lira Regional Referral hospital.

Solomon Odur, the Kwania District Surveillance Focal Person, says the positive cases were ordered to self-isolate in their homes where they will be monitored by health officials. Dr. Moses Ebong, the Kwania District Health Officer, says they asked the district authorities to close for 14 days to allow for disinfection.
