The new vice chancellor of Makerere University Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has been challenged to urgently address allegations of marks alteration, lecturers offering “sex for marks”, unending strikes and a huge debt totaling to UGX 77.6 billion.

Prof Barnabas Nawangwe was officially installed as the vice chancellor of Makerere University last evening at high level function presided over by the President Yoweri Museveni at the University Main Hall amidst the outgoing vice chancellor Prof. Edward Ddumba and Chancellor Dr. Ezira Suruma.

Prof. Nawangwe, who has been the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration, has a huge task of clearing a huge university debt comprising of staff incentives currently standing at UGS 24.1 billion , UGX 2.3 billion for teaching allowances and unpaid external examiners amounting to UGX 169 million.

Makerere also owes suppliers UGX 5.8 billion, arrears for support staff under the Deposit Administration Plan (DAP) of UGX 24 billion that accrued for the period between 2013 and 2015 and another UGX 15 billion that is meant for the retired staff.

Besides employing his leadership skills to find a solution to a huge wage burden and ensuring staff and students’ commitment to intellectual and moral discipline the Chairperson of the University Council Eng. Dr. Charles Wana-Etyem, asked the new vice chancellor to build a strong partnership with the private sector and real estate industry to raise revenue for the university.

Prof. Nawangwe comes at the time when the university’s image is tainted over such misbehavior but has already promised robust changes starting with the challenge of altering exam results.
