The Uganda Prison Service has confirmed the death of its two staff allegedly shot by their colleague identified as Jacob Otim, a Prison warder.

The deceased are identified as Wardress Eunice Abwot 25, and Warder Edward Namanya 26, all attached to Bugungu Government Prison in Kanfunta, Nyenga Division in Njeru Municipal Council, Buikwe District including the suspect.

Frank Mayanja Baine, the Prison Spokesperson says Otim, a 28 year old attached to Bugungu government prison in Buikwe district instantly first shot Abwot at the sentry where she was and later shot Namanya who had come from the second sentry to establish the cause of the shooting.

Warder Otim had signed a gun to go for general duties only to use it into killing his fellow warders and after the shootings he tried to commit suicide but failed according to Baine.

The suspect was subdued by other staff on duty and detained until the police arrived and took over the crime scene, exhibits and the culprit for further management.

It is alleged that the suspect and the female victim were in a relationship and had some domestic problems with which they have an eight-month-old baby, but they were yet to bring the matters to the public.

Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson, Hellen Butoto confirmed the incident saying the suspect has since been arrested and is under detention at Njeru Police Station as investigations continue.

Butoto noted that the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.
