Sections of leaders have reacted to the presidential address last night as a no solution to Uganda’s economic problem.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni again stated that his government will not reduce taxes on fuel or provide subsidies for other essential commodities which are experiencing run away price increases saying the lasting solution is for Uganda to embrace electric cars, motorcycles and the use of trains.

By reducing taxes Museveni said in his televised address on July 20th 2022, they would be providing a wrong solution to the problem which he attributed to among others the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and to the decision by much of the Western world to start moving away from fossil fuels.

He said the good thing Uganda started manufacturing electric buses and the project needs Shs 20billion to make more buses at Kiira which is the correct way instead of spending money to subsidies the mistakes adding that government is going to intensify the promotion of palm oil growing in areas such as Kalangala, Buvuma and Maruzi to address high prices of soap, cooking oil and other products.

Prices of fuel have jumped beyond Shs 10,000 in some places across the country. Currently in Kampala, petrol buys between Shs 6500-7000 a litter.

However Councilor Ssempijja Emmanuel Lukayidde of Makindye Ssabagabo municipality says the NRM is to blame for all the mistakes among them high administrative expenditure, corruption, underfunding of priority areas like agriculture, health education and value addition for the local produce.
