Ugandans are soon to have electricity tariffs reduced

This has been revealed by the State Minister for Energy Simon D’Ujanga while presenting the ministry’s budget for the financial year 2017/18 of UGX 1.6 trillion before the Parliamentary Natural Resource Committee in which legislatures tasked the ministry to explain what it’s doing to lower the highly unaffordable electricity tariffs.

Responding to the concern of the Members of Parliament (MPs), D’Ujanga said they have already proposed to government to exempt Bujagali power dam from taxes in the next financial year as a way to cut down the tariffs.

He assures that with effect from June this year, the electricity tariff will be cut by 3.1 cents from the current 11 cents bringing the cost of a unit at 7.9 cents.

D’Ujanga also appeals to legislatures to embrace and support the tax exemption of Bujagali once tax amendments are tabled before parliament.

When asked about the progress on Karuma and Isimba dam projects which had stopped due to the reported cracks, D’Ujanga said repairs on the cracks have been completed and work has resumed.
