The Parliamentary committee on Education has started scrutinizing the new amendments in the UNEB Act of 1985.

The Act which is said to be over due with loopholes in as far as addressing the current challenges in education system especially examination malpractices are concerned needs to be revisited to suit the current demands.

Among the proposed amendments include; punishing anyone found cheating exams by imprisonment for a period of 10 years or pay a fine of Shs 2 million, reducing board members of UNEB from 36 to17, punishing UNEB officials implicated in examination malpractices by either imprisonment or withdrawal of their professional certificates among others.

Speaking to one of the committee member also representative of workers in parliament Margaret Rubasaijja said most of schools or individuals have been taking advantage of the weak current UNEB Act to influence performance of students.

On average UNEB has been confiscating examination results for at least 1,000 candidates at; Primary Leveling Examinations PLE, Uganda Certificate of Education UCE and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education UACE over examination malpractice.
