Mulago National Referral Hospital has launched a Laparoscopy Simulation Center where minimally invasive surgery and internal body examination known as Laparoscopy and Endoscopy respectively will be conducted.

Laparoscopy is an operation performed in the abdomen or pelvis using small incisions with the aid of a camera while an endoscopy is a procedure used in medicine to look inside the body.

Dr John Sekabira, the Senior Pediatric Surgeon Consultant at Mulago hospital says that in this center, they are adopting the technology of operating patients using cameras and TVs without cutting them which quickens the recovery and doesn’t leave scars on people’s bodies.

Dr. Sekabira says that the center will also be used to train medics like nurses, doctors and other postgraduate students to increase the number of endoscopy surgeons who are now 10.

He is hopeful that they are to set up more centers in other hospitals country wide to enhance medical services in the country using technology.

At the same function of launching the Laparoscopy Simulation Center, the government of Korea through its organization Korea International Cooperation Agency –KOICA has donated Endoscopy Surgery Machines worth 200million to Mulago Endoscopy/Laparoscopy Center.
