The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health Dr Diana Atwine has interdicted the Mulago National Referral Hospital Executive Director Dr Bonaventure Byarugaba Baterana from duty.

In a statement signed and released this evening, Dr Atwine has ordered Dr Baterana to hand over his office to the Deputy Director Mulago Hospital Dr Rosemary Byanyima and also keep away from duty until further notice.

Early this week, Dr Baterana and other officials at Mulago National Referral Hospital were arrested by the Statehouse Health Monitoring Unit over crimes committed in the last four years and cost the government over 28 billion shillings.

Police later preferred charges of fraudulent accounting, abuse of office, embezzlement and causing financial loss to the government against Dr Baterana.

Now, Dr. Atwine quoted Section F-d (4) of the Public Service Standing Orders to freeze Dr. Baterana from leaving the country without her permission during the period of interdiction and will also receive half pay with effect from today until the charges against him are cleared.
